DAVID WITH GOLIATH'S HEAD

Risultati immagini per davide e golia caravaggioThis painting by Caravaggio was probably realized in 1609 and it represents the scene from the myth of David and Goliath in which the young sheeper beheads the giant.
It looks so realistic, thanks to the lights and the shadows we can observe in it and that make it a tridimentional painting. It's so impressive how the artist was able to give the idea of such a kind of portraits at that time and that's why we consider him as the last baroque artist and the introducer of the Realism.
The historical sources tell us both the characters represented in the painting are two self-portraits of Caravaggio in two different periods of his life: David shows his young innocent face, while Goliath seems to look like him when he was already destroyed by his poor life, maybe also for attending places as taverns.
The scene seems to describe themes as the redemption.
